I-beam Moment of Inertia | Online Calculator (2024)

In this calculation, an I-beam with cross-sectional dimensions B × H, shelf thickness t and wall thickness s is considered. As a result of calculations, the area moment of inertia Ix about centroidal axis X, moment of inertia Iy about centroidal axis Y, and cross-sectional area A are determined.

Also, from the known bending moment Mx in the section, it is possible to calculate the maximum bending stress σ of the respective beam.

BASIC FORMULAS

Ix = [B*H3 - (B - s)*(H - 2t)3] / 12;

Iy = [2t*B3 + (H - 2t)*s3] / 12;

A = 2B*t + (H - 2t)*s;

σ = Mx*H / 2Ix.
