The Chi: Season 4 | Rotten Tomatoes (2024)

Reviews 65% Audience Score Fewer than 50 Ratings The South Side of Chicago carries daily danger, and the smallest and simplest of decisions can have life or death consequences for the residents. Life continues as the kids prep for school and their parents shuffle off to work. The young adults of the area are trying to scrape a living for themselves, while the elders sit on their front porches and observe the goings on. The South Side has the potential to crush dreams, and this coming-of-age series focuses on Kevin, a preteen who embraces the normal rites of childhood, Brandon, who makes a leap of faith to succeed in love and life with Jerrika, Emmett, who seeks guidance from his mother, and Ronnie, who is a drifter struggling to be loved. All of them are linked together by sheer coincidence as they seek redemption. Read More Read Less Watch on Fandango at Home Buy Now

There was so much promise, but the writing is truly terrible. The real question is: how does this continue to get renewed? The creators should spend some time on the subreddit and take some pointers. I can't recommend such a huge disappointment of a show. It had promise, but it has been off the rail since season 2. Don't waste your time. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/22 Full Review Audience Member Season 1 and 2 were great. The show is unwatchable at this point. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 4 of the Chi was just terrible, with completely unbelievable story lines and poor writing. Douda, who is mayor of Chicago, somehow runs around the city without security or staffers that allow him to be shot, regularly take meetings in his city hall office (!!) with drug dealers (Trig) and other criminals, and beat nearly to death a supporter/staffer (I can't figure out which Marcus is, because the poor writing just drops him in scenes where he's depicted as one or the other, depending on the flavor of the day) without being around or aided by any security. Also, Douda was able to defund the police, by fiat.... or something.... that happened off screen without any discussion of the politics of doing something so totally unbelievable. Again, just a stupid plot point by the lazy writers to drive a story line. Oh yeah, in that vein, somehow Jemma is the one who has the camera footage of Douda beating her dad, but the police..... don't.... I guess that defunding thing was really successful and there are zero police working in the city. Finally, and the dumbest plot point of all, has Douda's wife taking over as interim mayor after he skips town. Yeah, that doesn't happen here, we have a city council that chooses interim mayors when necessary, and it's highly unbelievable that the city council would choose the wife of a guy who was mysteriously shot, and is suddenly resigning *and* leaving town under a cloud of suspicion. Also, the cinematography of this show sucked this season. For some reason, nearly every single shot indoors was depicted as if all the rooms were smoky, like a bar from the 70s. I don't know if this was supposed to convey something, but it just looked bad and was really distracting. All of this is too bad, because the story around Papa, Kevin, and Jake is a really good one that I enjoyed watching this season but it couldn't prevent me from hate watching the last 4 or 5 shows of this season, because it was just that bad. I'm surprised it was renewed for a 5th season, I won't be renewing my sub to Showtime to watch it. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
