Barbie has been a cultural icon for nearly 70 years! I’ve loved Barbie since I was a child and today I’m sharing a love letter to my favorite childhood doll. Why is Barbie so popular in 2023?
Of course, the Barbie movie has a lot to do with Barbie’s recent resurgence in popularity but truthfully, Barbie has always been popular. Even to this day, there are SO many reasons why people still love Barbie. Her outfits, the nostaglia, and her positive influence are just some of those reasons. Personally, there are a lot of reasons why I love Barbie and it all stems from my childhood.
My History with Barbie
Growing up, I played with Barbies non-stop. It was, BY FAR, my favorite toy! I never did have the Barbie Dream House or pink Barbie car but my doll was my most prized possession at that time. And let me tell you, the early 90s had some pretty cool toys out! None could compare with Barbie.
My great-grandmother was also a Barbie collector. She owned an antique store and my love of vintage items definitely came from her! She also increased my love for Barbie. When I say she was a collector, I mean that she had every single doll ever made and they were all SO beautiful. I could stare at them for hours, looking at the tiny details of every little outfit. And because they were special to her, they became even more special to me.
As I got older, I learned how to sew and started making clothing for my Barbies. I loved to make them look beautiful! I had always dreamed of being a fashion designer and I love how Barbie helped to inspire this in me. She allowed me to dream, to wish, and to hope for a magical future. She inspired me to be my authentic self… independent, intelligent, ultra feminine and a lover of pink (something we are not always pushed to do by society).

Barbie is Feminine
When you first look at Barbie, it’s very obvious that she is incredibly feminine. In a time where femininity seems to be lost and at times, scrutinized, I love that Barbie has remained feminine to this day. She is the ultimate girly girl! Could you imagine if Barbie wore sweatpants? LOL! Which brings me to…
Barbie Has the Best Wardrobe
Seriously. I LOVE Barbie’s wardrobe! She has the best outfits – always so classy, glamorous and stylish. Personally, I love the earlier ones because I’m such a fan of 50s and 60s style but they are all iconic in their own right (check out my replication of her 1962 Garden Party Look!). Growing up, I loved the Disney Princess Barbies the most (shocker)!
Barbie is Pink Icon
Barbie is a girl after my own heart! I live and breathe PINK. It’s my favorite color ever and you can find this anywhere from my closet to my home. As a child, I absolutely loved all of the pink that Barbie had – the Dream House, the car, her clothing and accessories, literally everything. And she always looked classy, girly and glam!
I have LOVED seeing all of the pink merchandise come out over the last six months. Before this, the world was full of sad neutrals. We truly needed this peppy pink in our lives! Barbie collabs can be seen everywhere you look and I am living for it! I’m not usually one to go crazy over things like this but I literally want everything. I did end up getting a pink hair brush, a Barbie perfume and the pink martini glasses from the Barbie movie (and the rest of the Dragon Glassware Barbie collection lol!).
Barbie is an Inspiration
Barbie has had every career you can think of over the years and that’s what I love. It gives girls courage to chase their dreams and hope for a better future. Want to be an astronaut, a scientist, a veterinarian, etc? Why not? I know that when you become an adult, you realize that there is so much more to chasing your dreams and being what you want to be. However, when you’re a child, having that possibility is just magical and you truly never know what it might inspire in you no matter your background.Barbie’s inspiration shows us that it’s possible to be the person that you’ve always dreamed of being!
Barbie is a Good Role Model
In my opinion, Barbie is a good role model! I know that some may not agree with me given the backlash she has faced over the years for her body proportions but this is just my opinion from my personal experience. While I never felt directly affected by Barbie in this way, I can understand why some would and my heart goes out to those that have felt that they didn’t match the beauty standard that Barbie set.
With that being said, I love that she embodies so many positive qualities like kindness, intelligence, and independence among others. These are qualities that I feel can help shape children in a positive way. I know that it did for me. It showed me that you can smart AND feminine. You can be ambitious and like pink. You can be anything you want… while also looking fabulous. This is so empowering! My thought process today is still very much inspired by Barbie.
Barbie is Nostalgic
For many, Barbie represents a simpler time. I, for one, am so happy with the resurgence of nostaglia from the 90s and 00s! This was the time period that I grew up in and it brings back a lot of great memories. During times where the world seems to be going crazy, it’s nice to see something familiar. Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of old classic movies and tv shows and indulging in childhood nostalgia to bring peace, familiarity and joy into my everyday life.

Why did people love the Barbie movie?
Sure, there are some people that might be scratching their heads but the reality is that many of us love Barbie. The marketing for the movie was just incredible! Margot Robbie’s outfits were impeccable and such a pretty sight to see (especially with the way fashion is currently lol). For many, it sparked that old, familiar warm fuzzy feeling – childhood nostalgia. For others, it was a happy escape in a colorful dream world. For most, it was combination of all of the above. The short answer is…people loved the Barbie movie because they love Barbie.
